Avoiding the Rockstar Attitude

Remember when you first entered the porn industry as a cam girl, model or porn starlet? Everything was new, fresh and amazing, and you worked hard for everything you got, never taking anything for granted. Somewhere along the way, it all changed and you became jaded. You started to take things and people the people around you for granted, forgetting who you were and where you came from. When girls in the industry get this attitude, we refer to it as having a rock star attitude, and you definitely want to avoid this–being a bad ass and a rebel won’t get you where you want to be, career wise. If you’re not here quite yet or maybe you’re in this state of mind right now, here are a few tips to get you back where you belong.

Keep It Professional

Show up on time, don’t act like a diva on set, be polite when dealing with other performers and directors,  give your best performance, and always leave with a good impression. You don’t want to be known as one of those girls who causes problems on set, comes in with a bad attitude, or is a trouble starter–this will get you a bad rep and definitely won’t take your career to the next level.

Interviews Are a Time to Shine

When doing interviews or dealing with your fans, always be humble, and most importantly be your self.  Your fans appreciate the real you, and being nice will get you everywhere.  Your fans will want to meet you at trade shows, buy you things from your Amazon wish list, buy your movies, and request you on the fan boards.

Twitter Is a Place to Promote Yourself

It’s not a place to start arguments, use a sounding board for your problems, a place to put your personal life out there, or anything else you can think of that would be unprofessional and/or ruin your rep.  Social media is a great tool to interact with your fans and get your name out there, and that’s how it should be used.

Amazon Wish Lists

And while we’re on the subject of Twitter, make sure you that you’re not hounding your fans daily for items off your Amazon wish list—it’s okay to ask a few times a week. Make sure to thank your fans when they do send you something off your wish list.

Bragging Isn’t Pretty

Don’t brag about doing drugs, being drunk, or huge shopping sprees.  Your fans want to know what you’re up to and get some insight into your personal life, but talking about these kinds of things won’t make them take a greater interest in you.

The Team Behind Your Is Crucial to Your Success

Treat your publicist, agent, manager, and/or lawyer with respect. These people work very hard for you and shouldn’t be taken for granted.  Your success is important to them not just in terms of dollars and cents, but they’re looking out for you.  These people are on your team, always, so don’t forget it.

Friends & Family

Speaking of people who care about you…these are the people you need to surround yourself with, and not push them out of your life–it could be your friend, family, boyfriend, girlfriend, or best friend. If you have ones that aren’t looking out for your best interests, get rid of them.

Staying Grounded Is Key

I practice Nichiren Buddhism for this reason. You might want to also, or meditate or do yoga. Do whatever you need to do to focus and stay humble. Check in with yourself on a regular basis and make sure that you are where you need to be. Sometimes all it takes is finding someone to talk to like a friend, or even your publicist.

Ultimately, life is about your happiness. If you’re truly happy, you won’t have the rock star attitude—you’ll be the real/authentic you. Just make the choice to be that person…every day.
