When Social Media Goes Off the Tracks

Social media is extremely important for a successful career in adult. It’s part of the PR Machine and free advertising that could possibly reach thousands or even millions of people. Most celebrities hire someone to run their social media. Some of the companies we work with  have us running their social media. Want to hire someone to run social media for you or your company? Hire someone who knows what they’re doing. Here are a few tips of what to look for.

Talk to Your Publicist

If you already have PR, see if they can do social media for you—they may charge you a little more. If they don’t, let them know about the social media person you’re thinking about hiring, before you do it. PR and social media go hand and hand, despite what some people think. And, a bad social media campaign can wreck all the stellar PR your publicist has been doing for you. We offer our clients a course in effectively using social media, so their stars can shine even brighter.

Gurus, Mavens, Ninjas & Other Lofty Social Media Titles

Many people walk around giving themselves lofty titles, if they do social media. Guru, Maven, Ninja and Expert are a few of the titles people dub themselves. These titles and many others get thrown around way too much. Yes, you should be very leery of these people.

Look for a Successful Track Record

Whenever hiring someone to run your social media for you, check out what they have done, and successfully. Look at their past Tweets and Facebook posts, or even check out their Facebook or Instagram accounts. You could even ask for references from past clients.

Relevant Experience Matters

Don’t hire someone to run your social media that has no experience in your field. For example, if you have an adult toy, don’t hire someone who has UFC experience and nothing else—this makes no sense, since their experience doesn’t lie in adult or mainstream success with adult products.

Let Them Know How Much You Want

We have a way that we specifically run social media. But if a client wants us to Tweet more or less, we can do that too. Make sure you know exactly what you’re going to get.

Contracts Can Be Tricky

Don’t sign a contract or agree to anything longer than a month, if you can. You don’t want to get stuck with someone who’s not adding to your company. In one month, you should be able to gauge if the person you hired is doing their job. And in three months, there’s no doubt about the results.

Don’t Get Ripped Off

You don’t always get what you pay for. Paying more doesn’t guarantee results, and paying less doesn’t mean someone will live up to the hype. Look at your budget, see what you can afford, and see what’s out there.

Rules of Engagement

Don’t let someone run your social media who doesn’t engage with people and completely automates your account. It alienates people, will get you unfollows or less followers, and isn’t how social media should be done.

One Last Thought

If you’re a performer, it’s best if you run your own account, even if it’s only for part of the time. Then, people will get to know the real you. It takes just a second to run social media from your phone.

If you want to hire someone, hit us up. We know people who only do social media, but we also provide it as a service with PR.

Bad PR Can Hurt Your Career

In the past, it was believed that all PR was good PR. Although most publicists know this is not true, it’s becoming more evident when you look at people like Donald Trump, James Deen, Martin Shkreli and others.

But what if the bad PR you’re getting is actually your publicist? Yes, choosing the wrong publicist can hurt and/or ruin your career.

Over the last few years, people have thought anyone can do PR, and have opened agencies with either no adult experience, no PR experience, or both. This has proved costly to their clients who have been ripped off and have gotten nothing for their money, or their careers and reputations have been hurt by people not taking them seriously, due to whom they have chosen to represent them.

There are several PR companies in adult and most are reputable. But, choose wisely–your career and success depend on it!

Here are some red flags to look for:

They claim more girls are on their roster than they really have.

Writing one or two press releases for someone doesn’t make you their publicist. And, being listed as someone’s PR in a ton of girls’ Twitter profiles doesn’t make a company more legit.

News sources won’t run their press releases and/or have to fix them before they post them.

If you want people to take you seriously, you have to have someone working for you with a stellar rep who can actually write a press release. We write all of our press releases. We never farm them out.

They spend their days on social media getting friendly with the girls instead of actually working.

We work hard for our clients, and usually 7 days a week. We’re not fan boys looking to get laid or up our status by saying we know this girl or that girl. We’re about business and doing as much as we can for our clients.

They give away free or discounted PR to up their roster.

We never give away anything–we work too hard and produce results. Our clients find they work more because their name is out there, so they can afford our services. We offer extremely reasonable rates and do more than most companies.

Their clients don’t get nominations or wins

Our clients win AVN and XBIZ Awards every year. This year, Ryan Driller won Male Performer of the Year and Archangel won Best New Studio. And, that was just a few of our client wins.

Their coverage is spotty.

You see our clients EVERYWHERE from press releases to interviews on adult and mainstream.

If you’re looking for excellent PR, we can help you with that. If we don’t feel we’d be a good fit for you, we can recommend another PR agency for you. Want to know more? Hit us up at info@therubpr.com.
