The Rub PR Welcomes Leia Down

It’s a bird, it’s a plane…no, it’s Leia Down, a villain who looks like a superhero that can morph into any super heroine of your fantasies (or just be the amazing Leia Down in her pink and black ensemble). She does things on webcam that drive her fans (who she calls Cum Buddies) wild. No one knows who the real Leia Down is—she lives as her character and interviews like her. She does have a back story of how she got her super powers which involves a strange light from the sky, a plane crash, four years of unaccounted time and her attaining super powers to become the sex villain she is today. She shares her powers of manipulation and her other abilities with her Cum Buddies on her site, http://www.MaskDDesire.com/. Notice the two Ds are capitalized—this is for her DD bust line, which also creates manipulation and chaos. We’re excited to have her on board and can’t wait to see what she will do next!

Friends You Never Asked For

By now, it’s no mystery that buying Twitter followers and “likes” on Facebook are a waste of time and money—you want your social media efforts and/or marketing to reach “real” people, not bots or fake followers, and having fake followers or “likes” can cause people to question your company’s integrity. There’s a disturbing new trend that’s happening on Facebook and Twitter. People can buy followers and add them to your account without your password or permission. And even though you didn’t buy the followers yourself, you can still lose your Twitter account and/or tarnish your business’ reputation.

Followers Are Getting Cheaper to Purchase

In the past, 10,000 followers could cost you upwards of one hundred dollars, but for as low as $5 on sites like http://fiverr.com/ can hook you up with the same amount of followers at a fraction of the cost. Your competition or someone who just doesn’t like you can purchase followers and have them added to your account—in legalese, this would be referred to as tortuous inference, and if you lose your account, clients over a stunt like this and/or ruin your rep, you could sue the parties responsible. Female performers also run into this problem when fans buy them followers, thinking they were doing them a favor. The problem with sites like Fiverr is that if someone does buy the followers from them, they might not always tell you who did it. You might want to contact your lawyer and have them write the site a letter telling them they are legally bound to provide you with that information, unless they want to be added to the lawsuit for interfering with your business, also.

What If This Happens to You?

Contact Twitter. This isn’t an easy process and filing a ticket is like trying to bring down the Communist front, and it may take half a dozen times of contacting them to get any action, but keep trying. It’s important to let Twitter know that your account has been compromised and what has happened isn’t your fault. Twitter can tell you at what time the followers hit your account and what site they were bought from. This will help your case in court should you seek litigation.

Next, change your password—it’s likely they didn’t have your password in the first place, but it never hurts to be safe. Make your password hard to crack with capital letters, numbers and go for a long word.

Check the applications you give permission to on your Twitter account. Get rid of any app permissions, you don’t really need.

You also might want to add an application called True Twit http://truetwit.com/. This will make anyone who follows you have to enter a captcha code to prove their real, and if they don’t they won’t be able to follow you. It’s a little bit of a hassle, but no one will be able to ever add followers to your Twitter account again. Only one follower can be added at a time, so if someone tries to buy and add 30,000 followers to your account, they won’t be able to.

Some people also decide to have their account private—in a scenario like that you will have to approve each and every follower. If you use a verification app and mark you account private, your Twitter account will be like Fort Knox.

And Getting Rid of Those Followers

If you don’t want to wait for the followers to drop off and Twitter isn’t helping you, use an application like http://tweepi.com/. For seven or eleven dollars a month, you can get their premium service and see which followers to delete based on if they’re real, have followers and the last time they used their account. This can be time consuming, but bulk unfollowing is quicker than deleting every follower on Twitter. Watch how many followers you delete in a day—if you delete more than 5,000, Twitter could suspend your account. Some people are using it for a shell game—they buy the followers, get rid of them and then add them back. More than likely you will only need the service for a month, but it’s good to do a clean up from time to time, if you want to keep the app longer than a month.

The Importance of PR & Marketing Seminar at AEE

This year at the Adult Entertainment Expo (AEE), I was part of the Importance of PR and Marketing seminar. Also on the panel was Michael Guilfoyle from Masque Sexual Flavors, Kristen Tribby of The Pleasure Chest, Steve Koskie from LM250 Digital, Jay Kopita of YNOT and other publicists. It was definitely well attended and the room was packed out.

Many subjects were touched upon, like why you need PR, why not all PR is good, how to handle client expectations and how to measure what your PR is doing for you. The most important message was that PR is important and shouldn’t be cut from your budget.

Although I was an expert on the panel, I did learn something and was reminded of some important things. Here are a few:

  • People will say no to you, but you have to keep on going–this goes for the publicist as well as the client. The important thing is to never give up or give in, and keep breaking down doors.
  • PR is much more than press releases. A lot of people think this is all we do, and that’s wrong. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes that your publicist is doing that you may or may not know about. We’re always working for you. On the flip side, you need to keep us posted about what’s going on with you, especially if things change.
  • It is a publicist’s job to control the messages going out about our clients. It’s important to stay clear of costly mistakes and not all PR is good PR.
  • PR is risk for reward and is worth a try. Sometimes, metrics (as in dollars) can’t be used to be measure the effects. Look at the whole picture when evaluating your publicist.

The bottom line is PR is critical to the success of your business. And if you’re a starlet who didn’t get the results you wanted at AEE and/or the AVN Awards, you need PR. Not to brag, but along with multiple AVN and XBIZ nominations, our client, Julie Simone was inducted into the 2013 AVN Hall of Fame.

If you don’t have PR, now is the time to check it out and get some. We have affordable rates, produce results and give our clients a lot for their money. Contact us at info@therubpr.com.

The Cupcake Girls…A Porn Girl’s Best Friend

If you’re headed to AEE, make sure to hang out with the Cupcake Girls at their AVN Pamper Suite January 18th through 20th. These do-gooders offer friendship and cupcakes to women in the adult industry, along with support. Stop by the Infinity Suite in the Hard Rock Hotel and hang out with the girls, pick up some awesome swag and chow down on appetizers and cupcakes, along with partaking in free mini massages, facials, breast cancer screenings and much more. The event is in honor of Hollie Stevens who passed last year from cancer. See the flyer for more details.

The Cupcake Girls are collaborating on  the whole weekend with Solace, who helped raised a portion of the proceeds that went towards making the event happen. Solace offers compassionate help to sex workers and had a personal connection with Hollie. Hollie wanted everything the Pamper Suite provides, especially the breast cancer screenings, for other performers–she understood why love and acceptance of sex workers is so critical.

For more info on the Cupcake Girls, check out their website: http://www.thecupcakegirls.org/.

Who Is Your Publicist?

Image is very important, and we all know that. But, who is representing you? If you have a publicist or are thinking of hiring one, the perception about your PR is very important. Ask around and find out what people think of your publicist. Sometimes we joke that people in adult aren’t really adults, but this is all very serious business. And, just a handful of us are worth our weight in gold.

What Have They Done…Really

Make sure to check a publicist’s track record. See whom their current and past clients are. Do they have award-winning clients? Are they getting their clients’ names out there with interviews, magazine placement, press releases and social media?

Reputation

What is your publicist or potential publicist’s reputation? Do most people take them seriously and think highly of them based on their actions and track record? These are important questions to ask, because your publicist’s rep is just as important as your own. Our reputation is pretty stellar and proof of that is that most of our new business comes from referrals from current and past clients.

Being Ethical

Being ethical makes you stand out and not everyone in this business is ethical. This is true of any business. Ethical means many things. An example would be that you don’t attempt to and/or actually succeed in stealing other people’s clients. We never talk to clients if they’re currently with another agency or publicist. If you do a stellar job, no one can really poach your clients. But no matter what, your publicist should have morals in how they treat their clients and other industry professionals.

Connections

Who you know is important. A good publicist will know a plethora of people. Contacts are important for interviews, magazine placement, toy lines, getting press releases to outlets and much, much more. Make sure your publicist is well connected.

Press Releases

There is an art to writing press releases, and unfortunately we don’t all have it. When news outlets have to correct someone’s grammar, spelling and/or rewrite a press release, they may not run it if it requires too much work or just to prove a point. Our press releases are run pretty much word for word and we get compliments all the time. Writing press releases are one of the most crucial parts of successful PR.

Interviews

Getting interviews is a service that we provide for my clients. Very rarely, I will do an interview, but it’s generally only to talk about my clients and what they have going on, or to educate people on what a publicist does. But, it’s all about my clients, not me.

Social Media

People are quick to say negative or catty things on social media sites like Twitter and think it won’t come back to haunt them. Many people are guilty of this, but your publicist shouldn’t be one of those people. We use Twitter to let people know about our clients’ press releases, interviews, award nominations and wins, and any other news we need to get out there about our clients. Occasionally, you will see a Buddhist quote to start the day on a positive note and/or me being social and Tweeting an interesting article, photo or just chatting it up with someone. What you won’t see me doing is slamming other PR companies or performers and being rude to others or starting fights. It’s important to always keep it professional, especially on social media.

Industry Events

I don’t even drink at industry events, even if it’s a client’s party or an award show. I’m in control. You will see us waiting for our clients to walk the red carpet, guiding them in the right direction. You will never see my assistant or me walking the red carpet. My behavior is a reflection on my clients, so you’ll always see me on point at an event.

This is just a small sampling of things to consider when hiring PR. If you’re curious about hiring us and taking your career to the next level, contact us at info@therubpr.com.

Gratitude

With the holiday and adult awards season underway, I started thinking about gratitude. Although 2012 has been a rough year in some ways, it’s also been a stellar year and given me a lot to really be thankful for.

First off, I’m lucky to have some great clients whom I love working with and really care about. They’ve accomplished a lot this year and I’m truly proud of them.

My business has grown exponentially, the agency is well respected and most of our business comes from referrals. This week, I’ve had two people I admire tell me what a great job we do and how sterling our rep is. Even when you know you work hard and make things happen, these are always great things to hear.

I have an amazing support system of friends, family, associates and other people in my life who not only encourage me, but also call me out (when needed) and help me to be a better person. In an industry people refer to as “sleazy”, I’ve established many relationships and friendships that could last a lifetime.

I’ve finally found an awesome assistant who has aspirations to become a publicist and grow with the company. If you’ve attended my last three events, you’ve probably met her. Aysia has been an integral part of the success of each party. We will be adding more employees next year.

I’ve learned a lot about business this year from my successes, and even my mistakes. It’s made me wiser, tougher and unshakable.

And lastly, I’m thankful for my Buddhist practice that gives me strength, unlimited possibilities and the ability to see things for what they really are. If you’re curious about it, check it out: http://www.sgi-usa.org/

2013 will be an even better year and I’m looking forward to the challenges, growth and things in store for my clients and company that we can’t announce yet. I hope everyone will remember to have gratitude instead of attitude, and be thankful for everything going on in their lives; good, bad and indifferent. The phrase “Gratitude Not Attitude” is going to be a catch phrase for the new year.
