Do Publicists Just Do Press Releases?

The Rub PR Girls Aysia (AKA Dizzy) & Erika Icon with Client Karla Lane

Last week, I was at the XRCO Awards with my clients. A few of my industry friends came up to me and told me another publicist was hard selling their services to them. This specific publicist mainly just writes press releases. So, the question was posed to me was, “Is this all that publicists do?” Because we were at an event, I gave a simple answer of no. Almost a week later,  I’m still thinking about this and want to talk about it in my blog.

Yes, press releases are important. I send them out when there is legitimate news for a specific client–most of my clients average two a month, but if they have newsworthy things to promote, we can do one every week. But, my job as a publicist goes way beyond writing press releases. Here’s a small glimpse into what my company does:

  • Setting up interviews (radio, Internet, etc.)
  • Getting clients in magazines
  • Connecting clients with people who can book them for feature dancing
  • Finding booths for my clients to sign at trade shows
  • Submitting nominations for award shows and coming up with successful marketing plans to win
  • Teaching clients how to use social media more effectively and/or helping them set up accounts

Karla Lane Joins Our Roster

We have just picked up a new client who is very well known in the BBW community and will soon be taking it over–yes, it’s Karla Lane. She will be launching her own site, filming exclusive scenes for Plumper Pass/Sensation Video, and is officially out of retirement.

You can also meet Karla at the BBW Fan Fest and Awards Show. She’s also been nominated as a Fan Favorite. The Rub PR is helping promote this event, and we’re sure it will be even more successful than last year. Look for a press release announcing Karla signing with us that will include a link to buy tickets and be part of this exciting event.

May Is a Big Month for Parties

This May, we will be throwing parties for two of our clients. We’re starting the fun with a release party for Sparks Entertainment’s “The Vampire Mistress” on Friday May 17th at Eden Nightclub in Hollywood. Hosted by Dani Daniels, the event should not be missed.

Then on Sunday May 26th, we will be hosting another party for our newest client, Angelina Valentine, at the very high end Supper Club, which is also located in Hollywood. Super Club is also the place where the XRCOs are this week, so everyone will be familiar with it.

Angelina Valentine is now with OC Modeling and available for booking. See more reasons to book her here: http://www.ocmodeling.com/model.php?id=448.

Both events are in conjunction with Jamie Barren Presents, the only promoter we use for all of our events.

Who Needs PR?

I seem to be asked quite frequently about who needs PR these days. My answer is EVERYONE. Anyone that wants to stand out and succeed in this business needs PR. It doesn’t matter how big or small your name is or what agency you’re signed with. A dedicated, professional publicist will brand and market you, and get name out there and keep it out there–this will lead to more fans, more work, more money, making a name for yourself and potentially marking  you as unforgettable, like Marilyn Monroe. No one can guarantee you will be a star or win awards, but having a stellar publicist will better your chances significantly.

If you can afford PR, it’s a worthwhile investment. And did you know, it’s also a tax write-off? What it’s not is just another expense, like the cable bill. Besides having an agent, PR is the most crucial thing you need to have a career and staying power.

I recently did an interview with Kelly Payne to promote my clients and educate listeners about what PR is and its importance. The hosts and calls had some amazing questions. If you’d like to listen, go to http://www.blogtalkradio.com/allpleasurenetwork/2013/04/08/kelly-payne. And if you’re in the market for PR, contact us http://www.therubpr.com/departments.php?dep=contact. Our rates are extremely reasonable and we will tailor a plan just for you.

Avoiding the Rockstar Attitude

Remember when you first entered the porn industry as a cam girl, model or porn starlet? Everything was new, fresh and amazing, and you worked hard for everything you got, never taking anything for granted. Somewhere along the way, it all changed and you became jaded. You started to take things and people the people around you for granted, forgetting who you were and where you came from. When girls in the industry get this attitude, we refer to it as having a rock star attitude, and you definitely want to avoid this–being a bad ass and a rebel won’t get you where you want to be, career wise. If you’re not here quite yet or maybe you’re in this state of mind right now, here are a few tips to get you back where you belong.

Keep It Professional

Show up on time, don’t act like a diva on set, be polite when dealing with other performers and directors,  give your best performance, and always leave with a good impression. You don’t want to be known as one of those girls who causes problems on set, comes in with a bad attitude, or is a trouble starter–this will get you a bad rep and definitely won’t take your career to the next level.

Interviews Are a Time to Shine

When doing interviews or dealing with your fans, always be humble, and most importantly be your self.  Your fans appreciate the real you, and being nice will get you everywhere.  Your fans will want to meet you at trade shows, buy you things from your Amazon wish list, buy your movies, and request you on the fan boards.

Twitter Is a Place to Promote Yourself

It’s not a place to start arguments, use a sounding board for your problems, a place to put your personal life out there, or anything else you can think of that would be unprofessional and/or ruin your rep.  Social media is a great tool to interact with your fans and get your name out there, and that’s how it should be used.

Amazon Wish Lists

And while we’re on the subject of Twitter, make sure you that you’re not hounding your fans daily for items off your Amazon wish list—it’s okay to ask a few times a week. Make sure to thank your fans when they do send you something off your wish list.

Bragging Isn’t Pretty

Don’t brag about doing drugs, being drunk, or huge shopping sprees.  Your fans want to know what you’re up to and get some insight into your personal life, but talking about these kinds of things won’t make them take a greater interest in you.

The Team Behind Your Is Crucial to Your Success

Treat your publicist, agent, manager, and/or lawyer with respect. These people work very hard for you and shouldn’t be taken for granted.  Your success is important to them not just in terms of dollars and cents, but they’re looking out for you.  These people are on your team, always, so don’t forget it.

Friends & Family

Speaking of people who care about you…these are the people you need to surround yourself with, and not push them out of your life–it could be your friend, family, boyfriend, girlfriend, or best friend. If you have ones that aren’t looking out for your best interests, get rid of them.

Staying Grounded Is Key

I practice Nichiren Buddhism for this reason. You might want to also, or meditate or do yoga. Do whatever you need to do to focus and stay humble. Check in with yourself on a regular basis and make sure that you are where you need to be. Sometimes all it takes is finding someone to talk to like a friend, or even your publicist.

Ultimately, life is about your happiness. If you’re truly happy, you won’t have the rock star attitude—you’ll be the real/authentic you. Just make the choice to be that person…every day.

Yes, We’re Different

Before our new client, Leia Down, hired us, she told me she liked that we didn’t promise to make people stars. She’s right, we don’t. We never over promise. That got me thinking about how else we’re different from the other PR agencies out there, because we definitely are. And because of this, a lot of our business comes from referrals from present or past clients.

There are a lot of adult PR agencies out there, but only a few that really are stellar at what we do. To be stellar, you have to be not only be different, but make a difference–part of this is offering services that others don’t and providing a high level of personalized service. Here’s a brief overview of what makes us different:

  • We only take clients we think we can help and genuinely like. It’s important to have a great relationship with your clients, so you can help them grow or get even bigger than they already are.
  • Because I’m a Buddhist, I take a Buddhist approach in business. I’m respectful in how I treat my clients, the media and anyone I come in contact with. I show appreciation to people who help and support my clients and our firm. We never expect people to do things for us, and we let people know we’re grateful when they do. This approach works well and brings people back to us over and over.
  • We offer many services that other PR agencies don’t, like getting performers signing with adult companies and studios at trade shows, and many times getting then paid for it. If a client is a company and they do a trade show, we do everything from start to finish, from paperwork to helping them run the booth.
  • If we get our clients a paying gig (like a spread in a magazine or hooked up with a feature dancing booker/company), we never take a percentage/commission. That way they can pay their agents a fee (if they need to), and everyone is happy.
  • We work with a broad range of clients, including girls who are new to the industry,  t-girls, and adult-oriented companies with interesting and/or innovative products and services.
  • We’ve even started working with mainstream clients, and have forged relationships with mainstream producers, directors and writers who have attained mainstream projects for our clients. And, we will have some very exciting announcements for two of our clients very soon.
  • And one last point…we’re affordable. We have some of the best rates and our clients get a lot of bang for their buck.

There are many more ways that we’re different. If you’re curious about PR and maybe even hiring us, visit our Contact Page: http://www.therubpr.com/departments.php?dep=contact
